The Volkswagen Golf GTI has always managed to combine everyday practicality with genuine performance, which is exactly why it remains such a popular car. Unfortunately, desirable performance cars can also attract unwanted attention, making good quality vehicle security increasingly important.
We recently completed this professional installation on a Volkswagen Golf GTI in Lincolnshire, fitting a FineVu GX1100 4K front and rear dashcam system together with an Autowatch Ghost 2 immobiliser.
The result gives the owner two very different forms of protection: high-quality video evidence from the FineVu dashcam while driving and parked, combined with the additional theft protection provided by the discreet Ghost 2 immobiliser.
Everything was professionally hardwired and installed with the emphasis firmly on maintaining a neat, factory-style finish.
FineVu GX1100 4K Dashcam Installation in a Volkswagen Golf GTI
For the dashcam we fitted the FineVu GX1100 4K, a discreet front and rear camera system offering excellent image quality without a large screen or bulky camera taking up valuable windscreen space.
The main front camera records in 4K Ultra HD at 3840 x 2160 resolution, while the rear camera records in Full HD 1080p. This gives excellent coverage of both the road ahead and what is happening behind the vehicle.
For us, resolution alone never tells the complete story when choosing a dashcam. A camera needs to perform reliably in real-world driving conditions where number plates, changing light levels and moving vehicles are considerably more challenging than the perfectly controlled footage often used in advertising.
The FineVu GX1100 4K combines its high-resolution front camera with a Sony STARVIS image sensor and FineVu's image processing to provide detailed footage during both daytime and lower-light driving.

For a daily-driven performance car such as the Golf GTI, it provides a very good combination of video quality, reliability and discreet installation.
Discreet Front and Rear Dashcam Fitting
A good dashcam installation should look as though it belongs in the vehicle.
The front GX1100 camera is positioned high on the windscreen where it has a clear view of the road without becoming a distraction to the driver. Power and rear-camera cabling is then concealed behind the vehicle's existing interior trim rather than having cables hanging around the windscreen or dashboard.
The rear camera is similarly positioned to provide a clear view through the rear screen, with the connecting cable carefully routed from the front of the Golf to the rear of the vehicle.
With the installation complete, very little of the system is visible other than the cameras themselves.
That is particularly important in cars such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI, where owners generally want to retain the clean appearance of the factory interior.
Parking Mode Protection for the Golf GTI
Because the FineVu GX1100 4K was professionally hardwired, the dashcam can continue protecting the Golf when the ignition is switched off.
Parking recording can capture incidents that occur while the owner is away from the vehicle, potentially providing valuable evidence following a parking impact, vandalism or another vehicle making contact and leaving the scene.
The FineVu also incorporates low-voltage battery protection, allowing the system to monitor the vehicle battery and shut itself down when necessary rather than simply continuing to record indefinitely.
FineVu's power-saving parking mode is another useful feature, designed to dramatically reduce the amount of power consumed while the vehicle is parked.

Ghost 2 Immobiliser Fitted to the Volkswagen Golf GTI
Alongside the FineVu dashcam installation we also fitted an Autowatch Ghost 2 immobiliser to provide an additional layer of theft protection.
A dashcam can record what happens to your car, but an immobiliser has a completely different job: preventing somebody from simply driving the vehicle away.
The Ghost 2 is hidden within the vehicle and communicates electronically with the Golf's existing systems. There are no additional key fobs or obvious keypads fitted to the dashboard.
Instead, the owner enters their own unique PIN sequence using existing buttons already fitted within the vehicle.
Even if somebody has managed to obtain or duplicate a working vehicle key, the correct Ghost PIN must still be entered before the vehicle can be driven normally.
