Are Road Angel Dashcams any good?

We visited this customer in Lincolnshire to install their Road Angel Halo dashcam into a Kia Picanto.

The Road Angel front and rear dash cam was professionally installed with all wires totally hidden and running alongside existing vehicle wiring looms, we aim for the best aesthetically pleasing look that almost looks like a factory install.

We are not fans of the road angel dashcam app, it seemed clunky and also wanted you to register with lots of personal information prior to even managing to connect to the dashcam to simply align up the camera lens angles.

We ended up entering old information just to bypass this as there was no option to skip personal details so that we could line up the camera angles. Hopefully Road Angel might see this and make changes to improve the app.

Road Angel Dashcam Reviews

Another point to note about ANY dashcam, take a look at the app reviews on iphone / android. These reviews are normally from the end users themselves and you should get a fairly accurate feel on the product along with how regularly the app is updated. Compare the review dates with the app updates if the complaints are relevant to just the app.

Looking at the video quality of the Road Angel Pro dashcam, we noticed a frame rate of 25 with bitrate a lot lower than other dashcams at 10mbps front (The 2k front T2s dashcam we used to supply was 22mbps) . The rear camera is 1080p (normally ok with rear cameras with good bitrate) but the bitrate was a very low 3.5mbps (1080p rear cameras are at least 12mbps now, for context the blackvue 750s rear was around twice that back in 2017).

What does dashcam bitrate mean?

Bitrate is the amount of data your dashcam records every second. You can have great resolution and good sensors, but if the bitrate is too low the camera has to heavily compress the video. This can cause blocky images, smearing and lost detail, especially when you’re driving fast or in low light. A higher bitrate means more data is saved per second, so there’s less compression and the video usually looks cleaner and sharper – making it easier to read number plates and road signs. Nevertheless, the video looked over exposed and over saturated on both front and rear cameras.
