How to setup Tesla cameras as dashcam You will need: Hardware version 2.5, this is any Tesla built from August 2017 onwards. a FAST good quality USB 3.0 stick with at least 1.8 GB Formatted to Fat 32. Each minute of video uses approximately 32 MB. Tesla owners are using these from Amazon. (Be aware if you purchase a cheap USB memory stick, it may get extremely hot when in use). Create a root folder named ‘TeslaCam‘ on the USB stick. Plug it into the front USB port in your Tesla. The V9 Tesla dash cam feature is a very basic system. There are quite a few Dash cams being marketed for use with the Kia EV6 including Nextbase and FitcamX. Most are 1080p which can be ok but none can boast Ultra high resolution like the T2s can. The Goluk T2s are 2.5k resolution cameras, both front & rear and these were installed to this brand new Kia EV6 Electric Vehicle. Most vehicles require a battery monitor to enable parking mode and we install our own designed Tornado Advanced Battery Monitor (the TABM-1). The TABM-1 powers off the Dashcam system when your 12 volt aux battery maintains enough power to start your car again (or in an EV's case, power up your display and start the systems up). The battery monitor then allows the camera's to monitor your vehicle and its surroundings whilst parked. Should your vehicle be hit whilst parked or someone were to "key" your vehicle, as long as there is sufficient power in your 12 volt battery, the camera's will record the incident. The Kia EV6 has its own battery management system that automatically recharges the 12 volt auxiliary battery from the main lithium pack. This allows us to set our installed battery cut off voltage accordingly (as a fail safe) and this results in the cameras being able to be powered and benefit from parking mode recording whilst the EV6 is parked up. My Teslacam dashcam has failed yet again, seems to be a trend in the past few days on facebook forums. Unfortunately when you buy a nice new Tesla, dashcams might be on the bottom of the list when it comes to those exciting accessories you want for your new toy. When in reality, a dashcam install should be the first thing on your mind to protect that expensive asset. Tesla cameras were not designed as a dashcam function and they were an afterthought. A software upgrade enabled some of the camera data streams to be recorded, if you had a specific USB memory stick, formatted it in a certain way, and kept good housekeeping on it. Formatting regularly and regular checks are required to ensure its working as it should. The fact that the cameras have been enabled is great, they're a good free addition to a professionally installed dashcam like Blackvue, Thinkware or Goluk. But to have them on their own is probably not a wise idea at this moment. We would certainly recommend enabling them whilst driving as the side view cameras are ok. But the front camera has a very narrow field of view and it also has a longer focal point when in fact you need the opposite, a wide angled field of view and a shorter focal point. Front rear and side view camera installs with 4 lenses giving over 360 degree protection (as in the video below) Dashcams are being installed due to their excellent recording quality, fast wifi app access and excellent parking mode settings. Having an electric vehicle like the Tesla means your third party dashcam can be recording 24/7 with very minimal impact to your mileage usage as oppose to the built in Teslacams draining your battery at an alarming rate of knots. The Tesla Model 3 has “Sentry Mode” allowing the use of the limited forward, side facing and now reversing inbuilt cameras but customers are still opting for a professional Goluk Dashcam install. Why install a dashcam into a Tesla? We installed front and rear T2s Dashcams to a Tesla Model X and Tesla Model S and also another recent install of a GNET G-on2 Dash cam to a Tesla Model Y. All cameras having ultra high definition cameras with exceptional bitrate recording. So with all Tesla vehicles nowadays able to use their built in autopilot cameras as an alternative dashcam recorder, why are owners still having third party Dashcams fitted? There are a few good reasons….. Our Gnet and Goluk Dashcams have an exceedingly higher 2k video resolution quality and wider field of view along with true HDR recording and audio recording. The Tesla front camera has a very narrow field of view and lower resolution with colours that don’t necessarily match with real world colours. The narrow field of view on the front camera is unable to see pedestrians when you’re at a junction. So if they were to walk out into the road without looking then your built in Tesla cam would not see or record this. The side cameras are a nice addition though, despite being lower resolution we always advise customer activate the Tesla cams when driving. How does Tesla sentry mode affect miles? A customer asked us a great question… What does it cost to run sentry mode on a Tesla? As the Tesla car is unable to run its built in cameras without having its main MCU (media control unit) powered on, this in turn ends up consuming hefty amounts of power (miles) from the main vehicle battery when you have sentry mode activated. It has been known for a Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y to use around 16 to 21 miles just overnight alone using sentry mode. With current electric prices that converts into quite a cost to keep sentry mode running and also a bit of a pain in losing precious miles just to keep cameras recording. We did some quick math based on the following..... The cost per mile to charge at home at cheap 10p per kwh rate = circa £0.03 (pence) (300 watt per mile). The cost per mile to charge using superchargers at 55p rate = circa £0.17 (pence) (300 watt per mile) The Tesla model Y seems to drop around 2 miles a day and circa 18 miles a day when Tesla Sentry mode cameras are activated. With the GNET G-ON dashcam you will hardly see any impact to miles dropped, its circa 5 miles in 4 weeks. So, having GNET dashcams installed that run 24/7/365, you would save at least 16 mile per day. To run Tesla sentry for 365 days, based on 300 watts per mile driving and a cost per mile to charge at home cheap rate (10 pence per kwh) would cost £175.20 per annum. To run Tesla sentry for 365 days, based on 300 watts per mile driving and a cost per mile to charge at the Supercharger rate (55 pence per kwh) would cost £992.80 per annum. So, installing third party dashcams into Tesla vehicles can be a great benefit and addition to the existing driving cameras along with saving you money.
