News of Tesla Model S vehicles being stolen in the Dore area of Sheffield hit social media recently, with the vehicles having pin to drive enabled it was initially a mystery on how they were stolen. "Pin to drive" was a welcomed software update that was applied over the air to the Tesla vehicles back in 2018. This allowed owners to set a 4 digit pin code on their Tesla that needed to be entered prior to driving. If you didnt enter the correct pin, the car would not start even if you had your key. This is a very similar feature to the standalone Ghost immobiliser (available for the majority of cars) from Autowatch. However the Ghost immobiliser uses your vehicles buttons to be programmed as a code entry. For instance, volume, cruise, heater and steering wheel buttons can all be configured as a sequenced code to allow you to start your car. A great security feature to stop your car from being driven away should the criminals clone your key, extend the reach of the keyless entry mode or even steal your keys. If they don't know the button sequence to start the car then it will not move. One of the Tesla's was recovered around the corner from where it was stolen from and it had a smashed passenger window along with most of its dash ripped out. It became apparent the Tesla Model S's were stolen by circumventing the pin to drive security by ways that we cannot share here. What we can tell you is that this vulnerability is apparently only on the older Tesla Model S and X's with the MCU1 (AP1) computer. This is normally applicable to Tesla's built prior to the end of 2016/beginning of 2017 and you can check which MCU you have by looking at the Software tab on your main display. The bad news is, we suspect that criminals may target Tesla's by looking at their vehicle registration to get a rough idea of their age, if they think that you have an MCU1 then they may smash a window to gain access and then begin to dismantle your dash to plug their computer in to see if they can hack and circumvent your pin to drive security. There are things that you can do to mitigate thieves taking your Tesla and potentially stopping them smashing your car window. Fitting a steering wheel lock can be a visible deterrent and these fit the Tesla steering wheel (click the photo for the local on amazon). You could have a Ghost immobiliser installed on your Tesla. Even if the thieves managed to break in, they would not be able to start your Tesla when a Ghost Autowatch immobiliser is installed. Security window stickers can also be a good deterrent. This means that a 2.5k 1600p HEVC video is recorded giving 152 degrees at the front of the car and also 2.5k 1600p 152 degrees at the rear. Most other dash cameras share the main camera to process and record the video of both the front and rear camera (2CH / 2 Channel). The result is a potentially high resolution on the front but only a 1080p resolution on the rear and when you start to change the video quality on these cameras, you may find that although the front camera quality may increase slightly, this might be at the detriment to the rear recording quality. Not with Goluk, you are effectively getting a front camera at 1600p resolution in both the front and rear. Tesla Model Y front & rear Dashcam A GNET 2k dashcam was professionally fitted to this Tesla Model Y in London. Teslacam vs dashcam The built in cameras on the Tesla are a nice freebie, but the main front & rear camera fall short in comparison to Manufacturers like GNET Systems Dashcam. The most obvious being recording quality, resolution, field of view and also third party dashcams have hardly any impact to the Tesla battery at all. The very latest in quality & data video recording technology, a 2K GNET G-ON Dashcam was installed into this Tesla Model Y, complimenting the existing built in cameras. G-ON 2k Dashcam The G-ON 2 2K dashcam provides excellent parking mode recording, recording a H.265 encoded video in 2K true HDR quality whilst driving and in order to extend the recording capacity, this automatically changes to 1fps whilst parking. Should the motion detection be triggered by a car driving past or a person walking by then the camera automatically increases to 15fps whilst parked. If an impact is detected then video is captured seperately. The cameras have a LBP mode (Low Battery Protection) so no extra power magic devices or additional costs required here. This means the camera can be powered 24/7 and will automatically power off should your vehicle 12 volt battery get to a low state of charge (normally only if you leave your vehicle for a long period without driving it). In the Tesla Model Y, this camera is powered 24/7 with next to no impact to the main lithium battery pack, a stark contrast if you activate sentry mode for the built in TeslaCams with this having a BIG impact to your Tesla miles/range. Reason being - The Tesla computer is very power hungry and requires lots of energy when its turned on. The built in Tesla cameras also have a low resolution (480p/720p) and on some cameras a poor field of view (the front has a very narrow field of view that may be a detriment should vandalism occur at certain points around the car as per the first photo in this post. Dashcam cloud : WithCloud - live cloud upload and recording Withcloud is included with this camera, should you wish to use the great cloud function then all you would need is a mifi hotspot or one of our own usb LTE dongle and a data plan. You can also use your smart phone as a shared data connection whilst you are driving in your car but if you want 24/7 monitoring and live view then a separate mifi unit is recommended. There are settings to add 3 x wifi hotspots to the camera so you can even add your home wifi if you car is close enough. This will allow you to use the cameras over the internet and view footage at a lower resolution. The Blackview 650S appears to have been the market leader for a number of years however after only having one installed less than a year, this owner of a new Tesla Model S decided to have his removed and replaced with a higher quality Goluk T1 in the front and T1 in the rear as he wasn't happy with the quality of the footage. Upon removal of the vehicle trims, it was apparent that this had not been installed to a satisfactory standard and this is why you must ensure that a Dashcam system is installed professionally. The 3 cables (power, front and rear cameras) had been "installed" in such a way that they lay loosely next to the drivers pillar airbag and the rear camera cable had been laid alongside the rear passenger curtain airbags which could be dangerous. Should the airbags attempt to be deployed, the cable could be ejected into the cabin where passengers are seated or even restrict and stop the airbags from deployed at all. The Blackvue 650s had also been "hardwired" into the Tesla by cutting/tapping in to existing power cables under the drivers footwell, effectively tampering with the Tesla wiring loom. Here at Dashcams.co.uk we ensure that all wiring to Dash camera's are routed securely behind airbags and their activation routes and/or along existing vehicle wiring looms to avoid them potentially restricting the airbag function. We also do not cut into vehicle looms. If other installers claim to have "100% Damage free installation" and "Does not affect vehicle warranty" - challenge these statements, ask how they get the power to the dash cams and where they take it from. A 100% "non invasive" installation would be either by using a 12 volt port or a piggyback fuse kit. An installation into a Tesla Model S takes approximately 1.5hrs.
