My Teslacam dashcam has failed yet again, seems to be a trend in the past few days on facebook forums. Unfortunately when you buy a nice new Tesla, dashcams might be on the bottom of the list when it comes to those exciting accessories you want for your new toy. When in reality, a dashcam install should be the first thing on your mind to protect that expensive asset. Tesla cameras were not designed as a dashcam function and they were an afterthought. A software upgrade enabled some of the camera data streams to be recorded, if you had a specific USB memory stick, formatted it in a certain way, and kept good housekeeping on it. Formatting regularly and regular checks are required to ensure its working as it should. The fact that the cameras have been enabled is great, they're a good free addition to a professionally installed dashcam like Blackvue, Thinkware or Goluk. But to have them on their own is probably not a wise idea at this moment. We would certainly recommend enabling them whilst driving as the side view cameras are ok. But the front camera has a very narrow field of view and it also has a longer focal point when in fact you need the opposite, a wide angled field of view and a shorter focal point. The Tesla front camera has a very narrow field of view and lower resolution with colours that don’t necessarily match with real world colours. The narrow field of view on the front camera is unable to see pedestrians when you’re at a junction. So if they were to walk out into the road without looking then your built in Tesla cam would not see or record this. The side cameras are a nice addition though, despite being lower resolution we always advise customer activate the Tesla cams when driving. How does Tesla sentry mode affect miles? A customer asked us a great question… What does it cost to run sentry mode on a Tesla? As the Tesla car is unable to run its built in cameras without having its main MCU (media control unit) powered on, this in turn ends up consuming hefty amounts of power (miles) from the main vehicle battery when you have sentry mode activated. It has been known for a Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y to use around 16 to 21 miles just overnight alone using sentry mode. With current electric prices that converts into quite a cost to keep sentry mode running and also a bit of a pain in losing precious miles just to keep cameras recording. We did some quick math based on the following..... The cost per mile to charge at home at cheap 10p per kwh rate = circa £0.03 (pence) (300 watt per mile). The cost per mile to charge using superchargers at 55p rate = circa £0.17 (pence) (300 watt per mile) The Tesla model Y seems to drop around 2 miles a day and circa 18 miles a day when Tesla Sentry mode cameras are activated. With the GNET G-ON dashcam you will hardly see any impact to miles dropped, its circa 5 miles in 4 weeks. So, having GNET dashcams installed that run 24/7/365, you would save at least 16 mile per day. To run Tesla sentry for 365 days, based on 300 watts per mile driving and a cost per mile to charge at home cheap rate (10 pence per kwh) would cost £175.20 per annum. Providing the very latest in video recording technology, a front and rear GNET G-ON Dashcam was installed into this BMW X5 45e. The BMW is a lease so the owner confirmed with the leasing company about having dashcams professionally installed and the leasing company was happy with this. Not only did the owner want video protection whilst driving but also whilst parked as he had some expensive garden furniture/ornaments stolen from his drive in the early hours not so long ago! The G-ON dashcam provides excellent parking mode recording, recording a H.265 encoded video and up to 60fps (video frames per second) whilst driving and in order to extend the recording capacity, this automatically changes to 1fps whilst parking. Should the motion detection be triggered by a car driving past or a person walking by then the camera automatically increases to 15fps whilst parked. If an impact is detected to the BMW then this again automatically captures video in full hd at 15fps. The cameras have a LBP mode (Low Battery Protection) that is built into the camera so no extra power magic devices or additional costs required here. This means the camera can be powered 24/7 and automatically power off should your vehicle battery get to a low state of charge. WithCloud - live cloud upload and recording Withcloud is included with this camera, should you wish to use the great cloud function then all you would need is a mifi hotspot or a usb LTE dongle (coming soon) and a data plan. You can also use your smart phone as a shared data connection whilst you are driving in your car but if you want 24/7 monitoring and live view then a separate mifi unit is recommended. There are settings to add 3 x wifi hotspots to the camera so you can even add your home wifi if you car is close enough.
