A camera needs to perform reliably in real-world driving conditions where number plates, changing light levels and moving vehicles are considerably more challenging than the perfectly controlled footage often used in advertising. The front GX1100 camera is positioned high on the windscreen where it has a clear view of the road without becoming a distraction to the driver. Power and rear-camera cabling is then concealed behind the vehicle's existing interior trim rather than having cables hanging around the windscreen or dashboard. The rear camera is similarly positioned to provide a clear view through the rear screen, with the connecting cable carefully routed from the front of the Golf to the rear of the vehicle. With the installation complete, very little of the system is visible other than the cameras themselves. That is particularly important in cars such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI, where owners generally want to retain the clean appearance of the factory interior. The customer wanted high-quality front and rear recording, discreet wiring and reliable parking-mode protection, without cables hanging around the interior or being routed awkwardly through the Kia’s rear tailgate. To achieve a clean, professional result, we installed the rear camera through the tailgate grommet but other installers might find it easier using our own DC03 rear dashcam headliner mount. A conventional installation often involves routing the cable through the rubber gaiter connecting the vehicle body to the tailgate. This gaiter may already contain tightly packed wiring for the rear lights, heated window, electric tailgate, rear wiper and other vehicle systems. If you dont have relevant installation experience, trying to force another cable through this area can be difficult and may risk: Damaging the factory wiring Splitting or dislodging the rubber gaiter Creating a possible route for water ingress Damaging interior trim clips Leaving the cable trapped or under tension 4k Dashcam for Kia EV5 For this Kia EV5, we carried out a full professional installation, routing the rear camera cable through the vehicle's original tailgate rubber grommet. Routing the cable through the tailgate requires carefully removing sections of the interior trim and feeding the cable through the factory wiring gaiter without disturbing or damaging the existing wiring. This is a job that requires patience and experience, particularly on modern vehicles where space inside the gaiter can be very limited. The Road Angel front and rear dash cam was professionally installed with all wires totally hidden and running alongside existing vehicle wiring looms, we aim for the best aesthetically pleasing look that almost looks like a factory install. We are not fans of the road angel dashcam app, it seemed clunky and also wanted you to register with lots of personal information prior to even managing to connect to the dashcam to simply align up the camera lens angles. We ended up entering old information just to bypass this as there was no option to skip personal details so that we could line up the camera angles. The rear camera is 1080p (normally ok with rear cameras with good bitrate) but the bitrate was a very low 3.5mbps (1080p rear cameras are at least 12mbps now, for context the blackvue 750s rear was around twice that back in 2017). What does dashcam bitrate mean? Bitrate is the amount of data your dashcam records every second. You can have great resolution and good sensors, but if the bitrate is too low the camera has to heavily compress the video. This can cause blocky images, smearing and lost detail, especially when you’re driving fast or in low light. A higher bitrate means more data is saved per second, so there’s less compression and the video usually looks cleaner and sharper – making it easier to read number plates and road signs. Nevertheless, the video looked over exposed and over saturated on both front and rear cameras.
