The Blackview 650S appears to have been the market leader for a number of years however after only having one installed less than a year, this owner of a new Tesla Model S decided to have his removed and replaced with a higher quality Goluk T1 in the front and T1 in the rear as he wasn't happy with the quality of the footage. Upon removal of the vehicle trims, it was apparent that this had not been installed to a satisfactory standard and this is why you must ensure that a Dashcam system is installed professionally. The 3 cables (power, front and rear cameras) had been "installed" in such a way that they lay loosely next to the drivers pillar airbag and the rear camera cable had been laid alongside the rear passenger curtain airbags which could be dangerous. Should the airbags attempt to be deployed, the cable could be ejected into the cabin where passengers are seated or even restrict and stop the airbags from deployed at all. The Blackvue 650s had also been "hardwired" into the Tesla by cutting/tapping in to existing power cables under the drivers footwell, effectively tampering with the Tesla wiring loom. Here at Dashcams.co.uk we ensure that all wiring to Dash camera's are routed securely behind airbags and their activation routes and/or along existing vehicle wiring looms to avoid them potentially restricting the airbag function. We also do not cut into vehicle looms. To enable speed recording and parking mode security a Nextbase 312GW Deluxe was installed into this Mini Cooper SD. An extra 12volt supply was installed so the driver still had access to the cigarette socket. The Nextbase has a battery function that enables up to 30 minutes recording whilst in parking mode and produces excellent quality footage both in the day and at night. The install took approximately 1.5hours. *Update*: This mini had a service not long after the Dashcam was installed at a reputable Uk garage and returned with damage to the front spoiler. The garage denied all knowledge and strongly refuted the claims that they had damaged the vehicle. (and other gadgets!) Ever had your phone display start to go really dark when you've been on holiday? Thats more than likely its heat protection kicking in to protect itself from failure or even damage. Electronic components are normally ok in hot weather but in extreme temperatures, things might start to go wrong if you don't follow the manufacturers instructions especially with memory cards. Dashcams are mounted in locations that are normally already hot and are built to take these temperatures. Most good dashcams can work ok between -10 deg C and + 70deg c and outside of this range some may also have extreme temperature protection (the GNET range have this). So when the camera exceeds a safe temperature level, it will automatically shut itself down and this is perfectly normal. Some compact Dashcams may run fairly hot to the touch, depending on ambient temperature as the camera body also acts as a heatsink to disperse heat. When you are driving this is not a problem but if you have Dashcams that run when they are parked for parking mode then this applies to you. Dashcam Memory cards NEVER BUY CHEAP MEMORY. Whats the point in investing in a good dashcam to then find out that the memory card has failed prematurely, especially when you need it because of an incident. Don't wait, make sure to buy good memory cards now. Depending on vehicle usage, it is also recommended to buy new replacement cards every 12 months and if you dont have format free dashcams, you should really format the memory every month or so. Connecting to the dashcam regularly ensures its in tip top shape and also most dashcam, automatically check for any new firmware updates that could fix bugs/improve the dashcam functionality. Dashcams can be writing video information to the cards constantly and the memory cards do only have a set lifetime of writing information. Dashcam issues in extreme heat when parked is normally because the memory card has either exceeded its lifespan OR more likely, the memory card temperature has exceeded its operating temperature limits. When the memory card gets hotter than its operating temperature, it may cause spurious actions like the Dashcam rebooting or saying that the memory card has failed. SanDisk & Toshiba Exceria M301 SD, SDHC, microSD and microSDHC memory cards are capable of withstanding operating temperatures from -13ºF to 185ºF (-25ºC to 85 ºC). Shock and vibration proof: SanDisk SD, SDHC, microSD and microSDHC memory cards are capable of withstanding up to 500Gs of shock. If you use your dashcam parking mode and the temperature outside is excessive or extreme, it is suggested to turn on sleep mode and/or High temperature shutdown. The Camera will then go to sleep after you have parked up to stop the memory card getting too hot. You should do this with each camera, within the settings. You could always unplug your dashcam if you don't have sleep mode or high temperature shutdown. To summarise: Note that in extreme temperatures the dashcam / dashcam memory may need to cool down. If you get an error on your dashcam, repeated speech or even random reboots then this is more than likely because the memory card has exceeded its operating temperature range and the memory card may be overheating. You will need to cool the vehicle cabin down and then re format the memory card. If you are unable to format the memory card then you will need to replace it. We're pleased to announce that we can now supply the popular GNET G-ON and G-ON2 Dashcams in an easy fit OBD kit form. What does this mean? The standard G-ON dashcam comes with a 3 wire cable for connection to your vehicle 12 volt, 12 volt switched fuse sockets and a ground point. When you don't have the tools or equipment to be able to identify those fuse connection points, or if your vehicle doesn't have those fuse points then we can configure the camera accordingly and the camera cable will come with an OBD II plug. Most vehicles have an OBD socket and this is normally located in the drivers footwell. This socket may provide data and diagnostic information from your car and it also has a dedicated fused 12 volt feed (normally around 10 to 15 amps) that can provide power for the GNET dashcam. For reference, the GNET camera uses around 350 milli-amps (.3 amp). The GNET dashcam enters and exits parking mode by reading the voltage from the 12v switched live feed however, we program the camera so that it enters and exits parking mode by using the built in G-Sensor. Due to the OBD socket in your car being "live" (always providing 12 volts), you can also fully configure the low voltage cut off protection on the camera using the app (we will do this for you anyway as a matter of course), we will also make sure that the camera gets shipped with the very latest firmware. We recommend the camera low voltage protect be set at 12volts, so, the camera will provide parking mode, monitoring and recording its surrounding always powered until your vehicle battery drops to around 12 volts. At this point the camera will shut itself down until you start your car, but will then automatically power itself up. So, for those that are happy to fit and tuck away their own camera wiring but want that "hardwire look" with hidden cables but don't fancy touching the fusebox, then this is the kit for you. The good news? With car resale values being great at the moment, you might want to remove that Dashcam kit fairly quickly, well this is the easiest way do just exactly that and then simply plug in to your new vehicle. However, as he had a tracker installed, Global Telemetrics (the market leading vehicle tracking company) were so quick, along with liaising with the West Midlands Police, the Range Rover was retrieved in less than 1 hour from it being stolen. Some newer vehicles may have their own tracker built in, the Tesla Model S for instance does have a tracker however it is not Thatcham approved. The Tesla Model S and X OEM trackers can be disabled and removed in less than 60 seconds! This is why the customer above had a Thatcham approved Cat S7 tracker installed.
