The video below shows just how quick and easy it is to copy a keyless entry key and then use it to steal the car minutes later. If you have an electronic car key, criminals have access to devices that can clone your car key signals: The signal that allows your car to simply unlock when your key is close to the car. The signal that unlocks your car with a physical press on your remote key fob. The signal that actually starts your car when it is inside. It effectively clones your car key electronics so your car thinks they have your original car key. But in order for them to clone your key, they have to be close to it. They may look for a car they wish to steal using one of the popular selling sites and then contact the owner to come and have a look at the car just like the criminals did in the video above only a few weeks back. This is where you need to be vigilant and aware of them potentially getting close to your key and cloning it. They may only need to be a few meters away but tell tale signs could be: Them fumbling around with their hands in their pockets, (the device could be as small as a tennis ball) Not really paying attention to the car, Not asking the normal questions you would when potentially looking to buy the car They may also ask for the car to be started. If you can, keep your key in an RFID protective pouch like the Tornado RFID key blocker, even when prospective buyers come round to view your car. This way it shields your car key so that it cant be cloned. You can show them round your car without unlocking it or even unlock it prior to them coming or unlock it with an app (if your car has this function). Criminals also have no need to be near your key if they are carrying a "relay device". This may resemble a small laptop pc and criminals would use this device by standing at your front door, normally in the early hours of darkness to extend your car key signal so they can unlock your car and drive it away. If your car has other protective measures such as Pin to drive like on the Tesla (you activate this function and then enter a personal pin to start the car) then you should activate this. Moving over to a Tesla Model 3 from a car that would have a dashboard display may be hard to adjust for some. So, when this customer asked if we could install one he had purchased at the same time as fitting his GNET front and rear dashcams we gladly obliged (we do love tech!). We installed a GNET G-ON1 front and rear dashcam, hiding all wires along the existing Tesla wiring channels. Teslacam vs dashcam The built in cameras on the Tesla are good, but the main front & rear camera fall short in comparison to Manufacturers like GNET Systems. This is in many ways with the most obvious being recording quality, resolution, field of view and also hardly any impact to the Tesla battery. The cameras have a LBP mode (Low Battery Protection) that is built into the camera so no extra power magic devices or additional costs required here. This means the camera can be powered 24/7 and automatically power off should your vehicle 12 volt battery get to a low state of charge. In the Tesla Model S, this camera is powered 24/7 with next to no impact to the main lithium battery pack, a stark contrast if you activate sentry mode for the built in TeslaCams with this having a BIG impact to your Tesla miles/range. There are settings to add 3 x wifi hotspots to the camera so you can even add your home wifi if you car is close enough. Front and Rear Goluk Dashcams were installed to this brand new Kia E-Niro. Excellent HD recording quality, fast wifi app access and unrivalled parking modes on both front and rear cameras. Each camera is able to record simultaneous video streams (up to 3) for both the front and rear camera. A separate wireless emergency button allows a 12 second video clip (6 seconds before and 6 seconds after the button is pressed) to be captured. Ensuring all wires are hidden and follow alongside existing vehicle wiring we aim for the best aesthetically pleasing look. Most vehicles require a battery monitor to enable parking mode and we install our own designed Tornado Advanced Battery Monitor (the TABM-1). The TABM-1 powers off the Dashcam system as required to ensure that your 12 volt battery maintains enough power to start your car again (or in an EV's case, power up your display and start the systems up). The battery monitor then allows the camera's to monitor your vehicle and its surroundings whilst parked. Should your vehicle be hit whilst parked or someone were to "key" your vehicle, as long as there is sufficient power in your 12 volt battery, the camera's will record the incident. The Kia E-Niro has its own battery management system that automatically recharges the 12 volt auxiliary battery from the main lithium pack whilst parked. This allows us to set our installed battery cut off voltage to 11.5volts (as a fail safe) and this results in the cameras being able to be powered and benefit from parking mode recording whilst the E-Niro is parked up. Some vehicle manufacturers have a camera in certain car models and this raises question as to why you would have a third party Dashcam system. How to setup Tesla cameras as dashcam You will need: Hardware version 2.5, this is any Tesla built from August 2017 onwards. a FAST good quality USB 3.0 stick with at least 1.8 GB Formatted to Fat 32. Each minute of video uses approximately 32 MB. Tesla owners are using these from Amazon Create a root folder named ‘TeslaCam‘ on the USB stick. Plug it into the front USB port in your Tesla. The V9 Tesla dash cam feature is a very basic system. It uses the forward facing and side cameras on the car while the car is on. It is constantly recording everything and cycles an hour of footage. There is no need to toggle anything on or off, just tap the camera icon to save the previous 10 minutes of driving. Pressing the save button just puts the footage aside from the deletion cycle. The Teslacam is "ok" as a free system but due to its restricted features, you certainly should not rely on this as a primary dashcam for your car. The quality isn’t as good as a £500 dashcam system and the Front camera field of view is only 50 degrees at 150mtrs with video resolution of only 1280x960 as oppose to our minimum recommendations of 152 deg FOV with at least 1920x1080 resolution. This customer was very pleased to have his wired dashcam removed and have a Professional GOLUK Dual Dashcam installation in his Tesla Model X. The Goluk cameras have an abundance of features that make it the top request from Tesla owners but some of the important ones are that the camera's are low voltage and low consumption. This allows the camera wiring to run alongside existing looms within your car, for instance along the thin conduit in the Tesla Model X windshield and not interfere with the other cabling. The Tesla Model Has sensitive power and data cables that run through this conduit channel to control information from the Autopilot Camera's on the windshield and other Dashcams either have a 12 volt cable and a rear camera video feed running alongside this and/or even tap into the power feed from the Autopilot housing itself. We take a totally separate unused feed and use additional safe supplies to take the voltage down to 5 volts. We also add a switch to allow the Tesla Service Centre's to safely power down the camera's when in for service. Other Dashcam suppliers may tap into power from the Tesla in such a way that the only solution to power the camera's down is to pull the lead out from the camera itself.
