We have seen an increase in vehicle thefts using car key cloning technology, Criminals have combined the likes of Gumtree, ebay and Autotrader to choose and pick their target, effectively using these selling sites as their personal catalogue for their next victim and the next car they will steal. If you have an electronic car key, criminals have access to devices that can clone your car key signals: The signal that allows your car to simply unlock when your key is close to the car. The signal that unlocks your car with a physical press on your remote key fob. The signal that actually starts your car when it is inside. It effectively clones your car key electronics so your car thinks they have your car key. but in order for them to clone your key, they have to be close to it. They may look for a car they wish to steal using one of the popular selling sites and then contact the owner to come and have a look at the car. This is where you need to be vigilant and aware of them potentially getting close to your key and cloning it. They may only need to be a few meters away but tell tale signs could be: Them fumbling around with their hands in their pockets, (the device could be as small as a tennis ball) Not really paying attention to the car, Not asking the normal questions you would when potentially looking to buy the car They may also ask for the car to be started. If you can, keep your key in an RFID protective pouch like the Tornado RFID key blocker, even when prospective buyers come round to view your car. This way it shields your car key so that it cant be cloned. You can show them round your car without unlocking it or even unlock it prior to them coming or unlock it with an app (if your car has this function). If your car has other protective measures such as Pin to drive like the Tesla (where you activate this function and then enter a personal pin for the car to be started even when you have your key) then you should activate this. If they are criminals and have successfully cloned your car key, they will then return at some point, maybe even the same night to simply walk up, unlock your car with their cloned key and then drive it away. If you have keyless entry on your car, disable this. If you have a thatcham tracker fitted to your vehicle, keep it installed until after you have sold your car or even keep it fitted and sell it with the car. Having had the new Thinkware F800 (Single front camera version) running side by side against a Goluk T1, T2 and T3 the F800 certainly seemed like a worthy contender for Goluk. At Shield-IT, our main focus when supplying and installing vehicle Dash Cameras is the quality of the video footage. Additional "nice to have" functions may be useful to individuals depending on application of the camera however, our number one priority is video recording quality followed by parking motion and G-shock detection, App functionality and speed of wifi footage download. After all, isn't the reason for a dash camera to ensure you are protected from others and have access to high quality clear recordings? The Goluk T1, T2 and T3 range are full 1080p and all three have an incredible bitrate recording of 12Mbps. This means, when recording to the memory cards, quality loss is minimal when compared to other dashcam's with a lower bitrate. The new Thinkware has a bitrate recording of 10Mbps on its front camera, whilst this is higher than that of the Blackvue 650s (front camera 9Mbps, rear 5Mbps), its not as high as the Goluk range. This means when there are lots of changes/movement in the video (i.e. when driving) there will be loss of quality that will result in blocky and blurred video. This will also impair the ability to read number plates as clear as the Goluk camera's. At the time of writing, the app appeared to crash a number of times and the cloud based viewing did not function however these will be relatively easy fixes for Thinkware. We were also unable to test the speed camera database functionality however should you require speed camera detection, we strongly recommend a separate application for this. "Waze" is an app available for both Android and iPhone and this updates you with live incidents on the road along with live speed cameras and average speed camera hotspots. Waze doesn't need to rely on constantly having to update the speed camera locations by downloading them from the internet and copying to the memory card. This is all done "realtime" and live, by your phones data connection with a minimal impact in data download. Waze is ultimately a great satnav application and you can just open the app and let it alert you over your vehicle bluetooth/speaker connections so you never miss an alert. We were impressed that other manufacturers are finally making their dash cams smaller and the F800's cylindrical body is the same thickness as the Goluk T1, T2 and T3 however a little taller also with a rectangular body that adheres to your car windscreen and is clearly visibly once installed. Footage of Goluk and Thinkware were ran side by side and due to the lower bitrate of the Thinkware, it did suffer with blocky artefacts however when vehicles are close, number plates could be read. We took snapshots of moving footage were compared. The Goluk has a wider FOV at 152 degrees whilst the Thinkware is 140 degrees. Due to this, we compared a single shot of the Goluk against 2 shots of the Thinkware so that the images were in line. Unfortunately a fairly regular occurrence now and it’s not just Tesla vehicles that are been stolen using a technique known as ‘roll jam’ from off your drive. This only applies to vehicles that have keyless entry systems (when you walk up to your vehicle with the key in your pocket the vehicle unlocks itself). Tesla Have rolled out a software update for their vehicles that adds an option to disable (passive) keyless entry, So, in order to unlock your vehicle, you need to physically press the unlock button on your fob. However if you are like me and like this function I would strongly advise that you protect your vehicle keys and this also includes your spare key at your home. If you also have a vehicle that doesn't allow you to disable passive entry then you MUST protect your keys by shielding and blocking their wireless signal. The way that the criminals use this ‘role jam’ technique is with a device that extends your car key making your car think that the key is right next to your car and subsequently unlocking the vehicle and allowing the criminal to enter the vehicle, start it and drive off. In order to stop criminals from being able to see the wireless signals from your car key and effectively extend them, you can store your keys in something called an RFID protect pouch. We have sold many of these to owners of Tesla, Mercedes. BMW, Audi etc, in fact every vehicle that has a wireless key can benefit from these. When you have Dashcam's installed, these don't really have any impact on the vehicle battery whilst driving. But if you also opt for the parking mode security whereby the cameras are monitoring the vehicle surroundings and recording any incidents whilst parked, this will have an impact on the 12/24 volt battery. So, this is why on most vehicles a battery monitor is required. Firmware Update version 1.7 brings great features and bug fixes to the T2 and T1 Dashcamera's. Timelapse being the main addition and this function enables constant 24/7 recording of 30 minute video compressed down into a 1 minute video clip with great quality. This is a nice addition and works alongside the motion and g-sensor detection whilst parked up. So, if you have had a Goluk Dashcam system hardwired with parking mode enabled, when parked up after 5 minutes the cameras will sense any motion and impacts around the vehicle AND now also record a 24/7 Time lapse video too. This is great if something happens on the edge of the video where the motion may not be triggered, rest assured the time-lapse will record the video. There is a new firmware and app update for both Android and IPhone. The firmware adds a much requested time lapse feature plus other enhancements. However a bug has been found that affects parking motion. The good news is, this has already been fixed but due to Apple submission timelines will not be released until another 2 days. I would advise to not update the app or firmware until this update is released. A fellow Tesla Model S Owner with a Thinkware Dashcam installed situated side by side. Seemed like a great opportunity to compare the dashcam footage quality. Having a great fast wifi connection meant that the Goluk Video was downloaded immediately with ease from the camera's built in local wifi. Only a small clip with no video editing apart from zooming in. As The Goluk T2 and T1 camera's have 152 degrees field of view as standard, it was no surprise that the Goluk could see further that the Thinkware camera even though the Goluk was situated side by side. The Goluk V1 Cloud box trials are going well in the UK. The interface is very quick, the uploads are instant as are the downloads when you request them. We are currently trialling it in a Tesla Model S and the added benefits of a cloud solution if you wish to upgrade your existing T series are as follows: Full Historic tracking (currently 1 month) Speed / gps coordinate logging Live view over built in 4g The WDF "Action" Button sends clips to the cloud straight away Automatic push notification and video upload in case of a road accident V1 4G box is self contained and also acts as a Mi-fi unit comes with a GPS antenna (mounted/hidden internally) ability to reduce rates/resolution to control data costs Single cloud solution created by Goluk, no added mi-fi box needed The V1 will retail at £169 plus installation and will take any data sim (we have been using Three which have very good 4g coverage on all major routes). There will also be a monthly cloud subscription fee (price tbc). Currently you are only able to access the V1 cloud box over a web browser as oppose to the Goluk app on a mobile phone. So, if you wished to download long clips of 3 minutes plus, it may be more cost effective to remove the MicroSD memory card and upload clips via your pc/mac. As with all Goluk products distributed by us in the UK, we continue to work very closely with the app development team.
